WELCOME TO THE
The Wild Bunch Rides Again
The Colt Peacemaker ruled in the old west, but John Moses Browning’s 1911 won the 20th century. The Single Action Shooting Society has had their focus on pre 1900 firearms, but the popular Colt Model 1911 has been added to the mix in a shooting category called Wild Bunch.
SASS Wild Bunch Action Shooting is a multifaceted amateur shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West just after the turn of the 20th century. It is a combination of Cowboy Action Shooting and modern Action Shooting. It uses 1911 semi-automatic pistols, pistol caliber lever action rifles, and any SASS legal shotgun. Contestants shoot stages (courses of fire) in which they engage steel targets. Scoring is based on accuracy and speed. Several variations of the 1911 may be used in the different categories, no extended magazine wells or fiber optic sights are allowed, but you can modify the gun internally. But, that doesn’t mean they can’t be fast. This is where the SASS Wild Bunch meets the USPSA Single Stack Division and IDPA’s CDP and IPSC.
In addition to traditional Wild Bunch categories, we offer a doughboy category. Rather than shooting a lever action rifle, doughboys bring their favorite BOLT ACTION rifle (in production prior to 1946) and take their rifle shots on, typically, targets that are farther away. This brings a whole new and fun aspect to the challenging Wild Bunch course and offers a unique opportunity to shoot legendary bolt action military rifles in competition! Typical Doughboy rifles include the Springfield model 1903 and the Mauser. All rifles must be shooting lead only bullets.
We think Wild Bunch has the potential for being a new and exciting sport in Oklahoma that would interest people from a wide variety of shooting disciplines. We are following the SASS Wild Bunch Rules (sassnet.com/wildbunch), we do however have an Open Class which is lenient with gun and caliber restrictions.
